Born in Basford, Nottingham and lived in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Son of William J and Fanny Cliffe, of 74 Victoria Street, Newark. He was a basket maker prior to enlisting on 17th November 1914 at Newark. He went to France on 28th June 1915 and was killed in action, 2nd December 1915, whilst in the trenches near Vielle Chapelle, France.
