Born at Wirksworth, Derbyshire and lived at 2 Highfield Cottages, Alfreton, Derbyshire. Son of Theophilas and Hepbzibah Ann Clayton, of 34, Preston Avenue, Alfreton. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting 17th December 1916 at Clay Cross, Derbyshire. He went to France 8th August 1917 and was killed in action, 4th October 1917, aged 25, during the attack near Poelcapelle, Belgium.
