Born at Mansfield and lived at 124 Brownlow Road, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of George William and Jane Clayton, of 6 Parkers Yard, Stockwell Gate, Mansfield. Husband of Louisa Smith (formerly Clayton). He was a market porter prior to enlisting 2nd September 1907 at Chilwell Camp, Nottingham. He was killed in action, 14th April 1916, by German shellfire, whilst in the line ‘rotten row’ trench near Bouvigny, France.
