Born and lived at Collingham, Nottinghamshire. Son of Henry and Hester Clayton, of Cottage Lane, South Collingham; Husband of Lizzie Maria Clayton, of Brickyard Cottages, Brough Road, South Collingham, Newark-On-Trent. He was a farm labourer prior to enlisting at Retford, Nottinghamshire. He was killed in action, 27th May 1918, aged 18. whilst the battalion was in a retiring fight from Montagne de Guyancourt, France.
