Born and lived at Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. Son of Arthur William and Elizabeth Clayton, of 38, Peverill Street, Hucknall. Was a coal miner and enlisted at Hucknall on 29th August 1914. He went to France on 12th August 1915. He died, 7th August 1916, aged 27, in the 3rd Western General Hospital, Cardiff of pneumonia and pleurisy.

Buried: Hucknall Torkard (St. Mary Magdalen And All Saints) Churchyard, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. South of Chancel, near the East wall of Churchyard.
