Born at Alfreton, Derbyshire and lived at Codnor, Derbyshire. Brother of George Henry Clarke, of Parkins Yard, Codnor. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on the 20th of February 1915 at Alfreton. He went to France on 10th December 1915 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
