He was born in Nottingham and lived at 35, Bentinck Place, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. Son of Stephen and Lavinia Clarke. He was a grocer’s assistant for the Co-Operative Society at Watnall Road, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. He enlisted at Hucknall on 28th May 1915 and was killed in action on 8th October 1916, in the attack on the German positions near Thiepval, France during the Battle of the Somme.
