Born at Bolsover, Derbyshire. Son of Harry and Emily Clarke, of 17, Corporation Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Mansfield. He served at Gallipoli during 1915 and was killed in action by German shellfire whilst serving in the trenches to the south of Thiepval, France, during the Battle of the Somme.

Died : 11th September 1916, age 21.
