Born at Bolsover, Derbyshire. Son of Henry and Rebecca Clarke, of Shuttlewood Road, Derby. Husband of Elizabeth Clarke, of 25 New Village Maltby, Yorkshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 19th June 1903 at Staveley, Derbyshire. He went to France on 4th November 1914 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 27th January 1915., promoted to Corporal on 24th May 1915, appointed Lance Sergeant on 11th September 1915 and promoted to Sergeant on 14th January 1916. He was killed in action, on 7th July 1916, during the operations near the area of Fricourt Wood and Shelter Wood, during the Battle of the Somme.
