He was commissioned into the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 23rd April 1916. He was killed in action, 19th August 1917, aged 26, by German shellfire near Klein-Zillebeke, Belgium whilst attached to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
