Private Thomas Arthur Chatterton

Born at New Mills, Derbyshire. Son of Horatio and Frances Chatterton of 35, Barn End Cottages, Thornsett, Derbyshire. Husband of Alice Chatterton, of Skelton Junction, Moss Lane, Timperley, Cheshire. He was a labourer and enlisted on 9th January 1913 at Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire into the 6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France on 29th February 1915. He suffered a gunshot wound to his head on 14th July 1915 and was treated at No. 50 Casualty Clearing Station and the 2nd General Hospital, Le Havre, France, 17th July 1915. He rejoined his battalion on 30th July 1915 and suffered a gunshot wound to his neck on 12th September 1915. He was treated at No. 17 Casualty Clearing Stations at Hazebrouck, Belgium and 20th General Hospital at Camiers, France 20th September 1915. He was then invalided to England on 21st September 1915. He returned to France on 4th March 1916 and was admitted to the 20th General Hospital at Camiers, France suffering from influenza on 18th April 1916. He was evacuated to England on 11th May 1916 and returned to France on 19th November 1916 where he was posted to the 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He sustained a gunshot wound to his back on 3rd June 1917, was treated at the 14th General Hospital at Wimereux, France and was invalided to England on 8th June 1917. On the 24th of September 1917 whilst still in England he was arrested for desertion. He was sentenced to two years detention but was sent back to France on 19th October 1917. and on the 24th November 197 was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed on 12th March 1918 due to enemy shelling whilst serving in the trenches near Havrincourt, France.
