Private William Charles Chappell

Battalion : 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Son of William and Mary Ann Chappell, of Houghton Conquest, Bedfordshire. He was a labourer prior to enlisting 29th November 1915 at Bedford into the 5th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. He went to France 27th September 1916 and was transferred to the 26th Battalion Royal Fusiliers 10th October 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his right hand and thumb and was treated at 37 Casualty Clearing Station, Godewaersvelde, Belgium, 20th September 1917. He was transferred to England 27th September 1917. He returned to France 22nd March 1918 and was transferred to the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 30th March 1918. He was killed in action, 16th April 1918, age 32, during the Germann attack near Kemmel, Belgium.
