Born at Litchurch, Derbyshire. Son of Peter and Hannah Chantrey, of 46 Eagle Street, Derby. Husband of Ada Chantrey, of 20 Mount Pleasant, Cotmanhey, Derbyshire. He was a blacksmith prior to enlisting at Derby. He went to France on 29th August 1915 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions near Ovillers, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
