Corporal William Chandler

Battalion: 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born and lived at Crewton, Derbyshire. Son of Annie Chandler, of 40 Chambers Street, Crewton. He was a sawer for Midland Railway Company prior to enlisting on 25th April 1912 at Derby. He went to France on 1st March 1915 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 2nd April 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his right thigh, on 25th March 1916 and rejoined his battalion on 27th March 1916. He was wounded a second time, on 1st July 1916 and was treated at 20 Casualty Clearing Station, at Warlencourt, France before being transferred to No. 2 General Hospital, Le Havre, France 2nd July 1916. He was promoted to Corporal on 17th October 1916. After recovering in England he returned to France on 10th July 1917. He was killed in action, on 22nd March 1918, in the German attack on the British positions at Beuvry, France.
