Born at Newton, Lincolnshire. and lived at 28 Mansfield Road, South Normanton, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner at B Winning Colliery, Blackwell, Derbyshire. prior to enlisting at Blackwell. He was killed in action, on 15th October 1916, in the attack on the German line near Flers/Le Sars, during the Battle of the Somme.
