He was born at Belper, Derbyshire, son of Albert and Phyllis Cartwright, of the Knook, Holbrook Moor, Derbyshire. He was a pottery labourer prior to enlisting at Belper. He died of wounds, 3rd July 1916, received on the 1st July 1916 at Ovillers, France on the 1st Day of the Battle of the Somme.
