Born at Arnold, Nottinghamshire. Son of Thomas and Harriet Cartledge, of Spout Lane, Arnold, Nottingham. Was educated at the British School, Arnold, Nottingham. He was a hosiery trimmer at Allen, Solly & Co., Arnold, Nottingham. Enlisted at Nottingham 31st August 1914, went to France 26th January 1915 and was seriously wounded in his back 9th August 1915 at Sanctuary Wood, near Ypres, Belgium, and died of wounds 12th August 1915, age 22.
