Son of William Chatterton and Mary Carter, of Bank House, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He gained a commission and joined the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 12th June 1916. He was mortally wounded in the attack on the German positions at Ovillers, France, on 1st July 1916 on the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme. He died of these wounds on 3rd of July 1916.
