Born at Elford, Staffordshire and lived at Nottingham. Son of William and Mary Carter of 12 Earl Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. He served in the South African Campaign 1899 to 1903 and re-enlisted 14th June 1908 at Chilwell, Nottingham into the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He went to France on 23rd December 1917 and joined the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. Killed in action, 21st March 1918, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
Buried: Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France. Noreuil German Cemetery Memorial 7.
