Born and lived at Gateshead, County Durham. Son of Mark Alder and Margaret Carr, of 104 Windsor Avenue, Gateshead. He was a postman prior to enlisting on 2nd June 1916 at Gateshead. He went to France on 28th December 1917 with the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was posted to the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 2nd January 1918. He was captured and taken prisoner of war by the Germans, on 21st March 1918 and died of wounds, on 12th April 1918.
