Born at Rawmarsh, Yorkshire and lived at 67, New Street, South Normanton, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, on 29th July 1915. Killed in action, 20th June 1917, whilst serving near the Canal Bank, near Ypres, Belgium.

Buried: Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 1, Row C, Grave 14.
