Born and lived at Worksop, Nottinghamshire. Son of John and Betsy Carnell, of 56, Cheapside, Worksop, Nottinghamshire. He was a blacksmith prior to enlisting 26th August 1914 at Worksop. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 16th November 1914 and promoted Corporal on 27th October 1915. He went to France on 10th March 1916 and was killed in action, 7th July 1916, age 21, in the attack on Quadrangle Support, near Contalamison, During the Battle of the Somme.
