Born and lived in Nottingham. Son of Benjamin and Zillah Carnell, of 6 Peas Hill Road, Nottingham. Husband of Sarah Louisa Hawley (formerly Carnell). He was a general labourer prior to enlisting at Nottingham. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Ovillers, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
