Born at Beighton, Yorkshire. Son of Joseph and Alice Carlin, of Beighton, Yorkshire. He lived at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, was an amateur boxer, and a coal miner at Brierley Colliery (Stanton Hill). Enlisted at Blackwell, Derbyshire, 20th October 1914 and went to France 28th June 1915. He was killed in action, on 30th March 1916. aged 21, whilst serving in the line near Acq, France.

Buried: Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont-St. Eloi, France. Plot I, Row C, Grave 15.
