Born in London and lived at Barnsbury, Middlesex. Son of William Tanner and Sarah Card, of 349, Liverpool Road, Barnsbury, London. He was a railway porter prior to enlisting at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was killed in action, 9th August 1915, age 23, in the attack at Ismail Oglu Tepe, (Chocolate Hill), Gallipoli, Turkey.
