Born in London at lived at Laburnum Grove, Beeston, Nottingham. Son of William and Elizabeth Calvert, of 52, Long Row, Nottingham. He was educated at Nottingham Boys High School and was a grocers assistenat prior to enlisting at Nottingham. He went to France 25th February 1915 and died of heart disease 27th January 1918, age 41 in the military hospital, Dover.
