Battalion: 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Belper, Derbyshire. Son of James and Hannah Butler. Husband of Lizzie Butler, of 6, Pond Street, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 17th August 1914 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He went to France on 11th December 1914. He was diagnosed with aortic valvular disease and admitted to No. 2 General Hospital Le Havre, France, 24th September 1915. He was transferred to England on Hospital Ship St. David and died at sea 24th September 1915.

Buried : Kingsway Old Cemetery, United Kingdom. A. A.O. 2257.
