Battalion: 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born and lived at Duffield, Derbyshire. Son of George and Hannah Butler, of 5, Tamworth Cottages, Duffield. He enlisted on 31st October 1914 at Belper, Derbyshire. He went to France on 3rd March 1916 and sustained gunshot wounds to his left thigh on the 1st July 1916 at Gommecourt, France, on the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme, and was treated at 41 Casualty Clearing Station, Doullens, France, 2nd July 1916. He was admitted to No. 2 General Hospital Le Havre, France 3rd July 1916 and died of wounds on 5th July 1916.

Buried: Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France. Div. 19. II. 4.
