Son of George and Louisa Butler, of The Settlement, Ockbrook, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 26th May 1915 at Derby. He went to France on 6th March 1916 and was treated at 63 Casualty Clearing Station, 3rd August 1917 suffering from Trench Foot and Bronchitis. He was transferred to 35 General Hospital Calais, France and on to England, where he was admitted to Moorfield Auxilliary Military Hospital, Glossop, 9th August 1917. He returned to France on 4th December 1917 and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
