Born at Thornleigh, Yorkshire. Son of Jesse and Florence Eliza Butcher, of 29, Station Road, Clowne, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was a coal labourer prior to enlisting at Chesterfield. He went to France on 18th March 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal London Gazette. 21st September 1916, “For gallantry and leadership on 5th July 1916, when in the attack on the German positions near La Boisselle (Tara Line close to the Albert – Poziers road.)” He was killed in action, on 5th March 1917, aged 21. during an enemy bombardment of Pallas Trench, Andover, in the Albert Area, France.
