Born at Chesterton, Staffordshire. and lived at Newcastle under Lyme. Son of James and Mary Butcher of 28 High Street, Knutton, Staffordshire. Husband of Catherine Butcher, of 7 Arthur Street, Knutton. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Longton, Staffordshire. He died of wounds on 6th October 1916, received on the 5th caused by German shelling of the line near Fouquieres, France.
