Lance Sergeant William Edward Burton

Battalion: 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Kegworth, Leicestershire. Son of William E. and Eliza Burton, of 2, Granville Avenue, Long Eaton, Nottingham. He was a lace threader prior to enlisting on 18th May 1914 at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He went to France on 1st March 1915 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 17th August 1916, promoted Corporal on 21st January 1917 and Lance Sergeant on 27th November 1917. He was killed in action, 11th December 1917, age 22, during a raid on three lines of German trenches at St. Elie, France.
