Lieutenant Richard Burton

Born 19th November 1894 on Yacht Bronwen, of Conway, Wales. Son of James Hartley Burton and May Burton, of Fryars, Beaumaris, Anglesey. Educated at Charterhouse 1909 to 1911 and Royal Military College Sandhurst. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 1st October 1914 and joined the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment at Estaires, France 17th December 1914. He was s wounded in the attack on Neuve Chapelle on 12th March 1915 and evacuated to England on 15th March 1915. He was promoted Lieutenant 23rd April 1915 and died of wounds, 24th June 1915, aged 20, after being shot in the head by a German sniper whilst serving in the trenches at Hills Redoubt, France.
