Son of Edward Henry and Matilda Hanwell Burton, of Valley View Brandon, Suffolk. He was a clerk of the board of education prior to gaining a commission with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 8th October 1915. He went to France on 11th January 1916 and joined the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, at Chateau Mussot, Marseille, on 15th January 1916. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
