He enlisted at Nottingham and went to France on 11th October 1915. Died of wounds received at Ovillers, France, 1st July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme at No. 38 Casualty Clearing Station, Heilly, France.

Buried: Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe, France. Plot I, Row B, Grave 7.
