Born Leigh, Lancashire and lived at Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. Son of Thomas and Ellen Burke. He enlisted at Nottingham and served in India. He went to France on 10th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th October 1914, when the battalion held position south-east of Bois Grenier, Ennetieres/Escobecques, France against a German attack.
