Born and lived at Derby. Son of Martin and Ann Burke of 47, Brook Street, Derby. He was a railway labourer at the carriage and wagon department of the Midland Railway prior to enlisting at Derby, on 6th August 1914 having previously served with the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment till 1913.  He was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France on 11th November 1914. He suffered frostbite and was admitted to 3 General Hospital Le Treport, on 17th February 1915 and was transferred to England. He was admitted to Belfast War Hospital on 18th February 1915.  He returned to France on 17th August 1915 and was admitted to 25 General Hospital Hardelot, France suffering from scabies and impetigo on 16th August 1916. He was transferred to England on Hospital Ship St. David, on 15th September 1916. He returned to France on 1st February 1917 and was posted to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 4th February 1917. He was killed in action, on 30th July 1917, aged 32, in the attack at Steenbeke, Belgium.
