Born at Swanwick, Derbyshire and lived at Skegby, Nottinghamshire. Son of John Bryan and Elizabeth Eyre (formerly Bryan), of Monsall Villas, Skegby. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Sutton-in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. He went to France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action, 15th June 1915, age 25, by the explosion of a German mine followed by a German attack at Kemmel, Belgium.
