Brother of Rose Hadfield, of 63, Park Street, Derby. He was a labourer prior to enlisting, on 26th April 1915 at Derby. He went to France on 1st February 1915 and was killed in action, on 17th July 1916,  by German shellfire, whilst serving in the trenches to the southeast of Trones Wood, France during the Battle of the Somme.
