Born and lived in Nottingham. Son of Henry and Rosina Briggs, of 11 Snow Hill, Nottingham. He was a carter prior to enlisting 23rd August 1916 into the 2/5th Nottinghamshire Yeomanry. He was transferred to the 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 19th December 1917 and went to France on 20th December 1917. He was posted to the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 19th January 1918 and the 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 29th January 1918. He was killed in action, 3rd October 1918, in the attack at Ramicourt and Montbrehain, France.
