He was a pawnbroker prior to enlisting 9th December 1915 at Southwark into the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He went to France 23rd May 1917 and posted to the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 15th June 1917 and was killed, 31st July 1917, age 30,  by German shellfire whilst serving in the line near Ypres, Belgium.
