Born and lived at Horsford, Norfolk. Son of Edmund and Mary, of Horsford. He was a farm labourer prior to enlisting on 15th March 1916 at Norwich. He went to France on 10th February 1917 with the 1/5th  Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and suffered gunshot wounds to his knee on 1st July 1917 and was admitted to hospital at Etaples, France, 5th July 1917. He was invalided to England on 16th July 1917. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, in February 1918 and returned to France. He was killed in action, on 23rd March 1918, during the German offensive near the Maricourt, Road, Somme, France.
