Born at Shotts, Lanarkshire. Son of George B. and Margaret B. Black, of 33, St. Marys Road, Golders Green, London; Husband of Agnes E. D. Mackie Black. Educated At Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen, Darlington Grammar School. Graduated M.A., Durham, 1901; M.Sc., Durham, 1903; Ph. D., Strasbourg, 1905. Registrar, Nottingham University College, 1911-15. He trained at Nottingham O.T.C. with the Black Watch Regiment. Joined the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 1st October 1914. He went to Gallipoli 1st July 1915 and was killed in action, 9th August 1915, aged 37, in the attack at Ismail Oglu Tepe, (Chocolate Hill), Gallipoli, Turkey.
