Born and lived at Sheffield, Yorkshire. Son of George Edward and Mary Alice Birtles, of 35, Highfield Place, Sheffield. He enlisted at Sheffield and died, 10th November 1918, aged 19, at 55 Casualty Clearing Station, at Bohain, France.

Buried: Premont British Cemetery, France. Plot 3. Row C. Grave 8.
