Battalion: 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Leicester and lived at Shirebrook, Derbyshire. Son of John James Birt, of 132, Station Road, Shirebrook, Derbyshire; husband of Mary Ellen Birt. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Nottingham. He served in Gallipoli during 1915 with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He went to France and joined the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was killed in action, 15th September 1916, in the attack on Guillemont, France during the Battle of the Somme.
