Lance Corporal John Richard Birley

Battalion: 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
Born at Alfreton, Derbyshire. and lived at Staveley, Derbyshire. Son of George Richard and Leah Birley, of 16, Inkersall Road, Staveley. He was an ironworks apprentice pattern maker prior to enlisting at Chesterfield and went to Gallipoli on 1st July 1915. He was wounded at Ismail Oglu Tepe (Chocolate Hill), Turkey in October 1915. He went to France in March 1916 and was killed in action, on 5th October 1917, aged 25, by a German artillery barrage at Pheasant Farm near Poelcappelle, Belgium.
