Private Bert Birley

Battalion: 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

British 15 Star, British War and Victory MedalBorn and lived at Bakewell, Derbyshire. Son of George and Mahala Birley, of North Church Street, Bakewell. He was a quarry labourer prior to enlisting at Derby. He went to France on 28th February 1915 and suffered gunshot wounds to his head on 17th April 1916. He was evacuated to England and returned to France on 4th January 1917. He was killed in action, on 23rd April 1917, aged 20, in the attack at Fosse 3 Leivin, France.
