Born at Morton, Derbyshire and lived at Auckland Place, Butwell Street, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Son of John and Mary Birks, of New Street, Morton. He was a Coal Miner prior to enlisting 14th October 1914 at Chesterfield. He went to France 28th February 1915 and died from shrapnel wounds to his head received the same day 5th August 1915.
