Battalion: 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
Born at Blackwell, Derbyshire and lived at New Tupton, Derbyshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Birkin, of 107 Bottom Long Row, Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Husband of Kate A. Birkin. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Killed in action, 14th February 1916, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium.
