Corporal Gilbert Birds

British 15 Star, British War and Victory MedalBorn and lived at Youlgreave, Derbyshire. Son of Henry and Mary Birds, of Youlgreave. He was a gardener prior to enlisting at Bakewell 8th October 1914. He was posted to the 1/6th 1/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 27th June 1915  and wen to France 28th June 1915.  Was promoted Corporal 8th March 1916. He was reported missing and prisoner of war 22nd March 1918. Was re-patriated 8th January 1919 and discharged from the army 4rth April 1919. He died 29th January 1921, aged 27.
